Disqualified for using a real image in an AI-generated photo contest
In an interesting twist of events, a participant has been disqualified from a photography contest focused on images created with artificial intelligence. The reason for the disqualification was the use of a real image instead of one generated by AI.
The contest, organized by a platform specialized in creating AI-generated images, aimed to highlight the capabilities and skills of this technology in photography. Participants were required to submit photographs that were completely generated by AI, meaning they could not use any real images.
However, one of the contestants used a real photograph in their submission, sparking controversy and leading to their disqualification. According to the organizers, this constituted a violation of the established rules and went against the spirit of the contest.
The photo in question is by the author Suzi Dougherty, of his son Caspar with two mannequins that a panel of judges deemed to be AI. (I cannot attach the image for copyright reasons, but the link is below)
The use of artificial intelligence in image creation has advanced significantly in recent years, and there are numerous impressive examples of fully AI-generated photos. These images can be realistic, artistic, and original, and have generated great interest in the world of photography.
The fact that a participant chose to use a real image instead of creating one generated by AI raises some important questions. On the one hand, this demonstrates that the technology has not yet reached the level of realism and quality required to compete with real images. On the other hand, it also raises concerns about the ethics and purpose of the contest itself.
The contest organizers have stated that they are working on reviewing and updating the contest rules to prevent similar situations from happening in the future. Additionally, they hope that this incident serves as a lesson and an opportunity to reflect on the implications of artificial intelligence in the field of photography.
